You Can't Always Get What You Want

00:00 / 01:04

I’m obsessed with short-term results.

The subscriber growth.

The money in the bank account.

The bigger opportunities.

I’m a goal-oriented person.

I get extremely frustrated if objectives aren’t met as I expect them to.

I want it all, and I want it right now.

Modern society’s social conditioning has made us expect everything instantly.

Netflix on demand.

Fast food.

Six pack abs in six hours.

And my favorite, the ‘like’ notification.

That dopamine hits us instantly and we need more.

So when things don’t go according to plan.

When things don’t happen right away.

It’s easy to panic.

Get down on yourself.

Become paralyzed.

Maybe giving things time to blossom is essential.

That you can’t force out an idea.

That being open to different outcomes, is not only more fun, but essential.

So I’ve worked on being less myopic.

On being patient.

On understanding that not everything we make will be the best.

Not everything will happen right away.

That some days, in fact most days, things won’t go as expected.

And when I feel that angst.

That need for that dopamine hit.

I stop.

I meditate, exercise, hang out with close friends, read a good book.

And more and more now, I look up at the sky.

And smile.

Because I know that when you give the universe its space.

You allow it to work its magical ways.

Love,

Dhruv.
